FLINT, MI- Low-to-moderate income earners may be eligible for free tax preparation services through the Genesee County Tax Assistance & Financial Services Coalition. The Coalition provides free income tax preparation services from February-April each year. Resource Genesee is a member of the Coalition.
Volunteers who have received IRS training in tax preparation make this possible at locations in Flint and Genesee County. An appointment is often needed and those seeking help are encouraged to call and reserve a spot early.

AARP provides another source for free tax preparation services for those with low-to-moderate incomes. You need not be retired to use these services, although many are located at senior centers.

These tax preparation services are important for many tax filers who don't realize they may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.The EITC is a tax break for working families and individuals designed to reduce the tax burden and supplement the wages of low-to-moderate income workers.

Last year Genesee County Tax Assistance & Financial Services Coalition and its volunteers prepared over 1500 tax returns in Genesee County bringing in federal tax refunds of $1.7 million. They also helped bring in, as of April 10, 2010, $750,000 in earned income tax credits to area residents --money much needed by these families and the local economy.
